How to Position Graduation Tassels

Schools vary on the position of the mortarboard tassel.

The omnipresent cap and gown worn at graduation ceremonies from preschool to graduate school date back to Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries and were influenced by religious garb, according to the Encyclopedia of World Costume. The cap, also called a mortarboard, features a tassel that has a significant meaning depending on how it is worn. Schools vary on how the tassel should be worn at commencement, as there is no official ruling on tassel position. Before walking across the stage for your diploma, learn your school's tradition and make sure that the tassel on your mortarboard is positioned correctly.

• Mortarboard
• Tassel

Instructions

1. Fasten your tassel to the middle of the top of your mortarboard.

2. Put your tassel on the right-hand side of your mortarboard before and during the commencement ceremony.

3. Switch your tassel to the left-hand side of the cap along with your classmates when instructed, or once you've received your degree. Each school has a different protocol for this part of the graduation ceremony.
