1
Give each player his own deck of 52 playing cards. Each deck of cards should have its own backing design.
-
2
Deal out 13 cards to yourself, face down. Flip over the top card. This is your Nertz pile. Every player should do the same with her own deck.
-
-
3
Flip over four cards and place them in a horizontal line next to the Nertz pile. These four cards are the foundations for your work stations. You should have a total of five flipped-up cards facing you including the top Nertz card. Each player should do the same.
-
4
Place the remaining pile of cards to the side. This is your stock pile. Make sure that when everyone is set up, there is room in the center of the table. This is the area where players lay down their Aces.
-
5
Yell "Go" to start the game. Each player should start his own game of solitaire. Lay cards from the top of the Nertz pile or from the working stations on working station cards that have opposing-colored suits in descending order. For example, a 10 of clubs can be laid on a Jack of hearts, or a five of diamonds can be laid on a six of spades. If you cannot move the top card from your Nertz pile or any in the working station, use a card from the stock pile. But just like a solitaire game, you can only use every third card. If you use the third card, you can then use the cards under it.
-
6
Place Aces in the middle of the table, once they become revealed. If there are Aces already in the center of the table, you can place a two of a matching suit on top of the Ace. This is a way to use up more of your Nertz pile and working station cards. If a blank space arises in one of the four working stations, fill it with the card on top of your Nertz pile.
-
7
Yell "Nertz" if you got rid of all your Nertz cards. This will end that round of the game. To calculate the score for that round, every player must find the cards they have added to the center of the table. This is why using different patterned decks helps. Add up the total value of the cards played in the center. Numbered cards are worth face value; aces are worth one; and jacks, queens and kings are worth 10. Those who did not get rid of all their Nertz cards must subtract two points from their total for every Nertz card they still have.
-
8
Record everyone's scores. Play several rounds. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.
