Update your decor with a replacement chandelier.

Chandelier replacement is generally a straightforward process. Even if you don't have a lot of electrical expertise, you should be able to hang a new chandelier without too much trouble. The main thing you need to remember is to turn off the power at the main electrical panel. In most cases, the chandelier's wiring should not need replacing, so installing the new light fixture should simply involve unwiring the old fixture and wiring the new chandelier. Be sure to buy a new chandelier that weighs less than 50 pounds, or you may have to add ceiling supports. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover that protects the old chandelier's electrical box in the ceiling. If the old light is heavy, you may want to have a helper steady it as you proceed.

    • 2

Use an electrical tester to make sure there is no power to the electrical leads connected to the chandelier. Unscrew the leads only if the power is off. Once the leads are disconnected, your assistant can set the old chandelier aside.

    • 3

Remove the electrical box by unscrewing it from the ceiling. You may have to use the tip of the screwdriver to pry it loose. Remove the old hanger bar if it's not sturdy enough to bear the weight of the new chandelier. You may need to cut it out with a small hacksaw.

    • 4

Shorten the new chandelier's brace by twisting it. Insert it into the hole. Place the pronged ends against the joists. Twist the chandelier brace until it extends and the prongs firmly connect with the joists. Do not over-lengthen it. You can skip this step if you don't need to replace the old brace.

    • 5

Pull the electrical wiring into the new electrical box. Allow about 6 inches of wiring in the box to work with.

    • 6

Run a U-bolt over the brace. Place the ends in the electrical box. Put nuts on the ends of the U-bolt and tighten them with a wrench.

    • 7

Take the shades off the chandelier and set them aside. With your partner's help, hold the chandelier near the electrical box. Attach the fixture-mounting bar to the electrical box. Connect the ground wires first. Strip off 1/2 inch from the old wiring, and then match black wires and white wires. Connect them with electrical connectors.

    • 8

Wrap the excess wiring loosely and tuck it into the chandelier's canopy. Tighten the canopy against the electrical box in the ceiling.

    • 9

Screw in all the light bulbs for the chandelier. Attach its light shades. Turn the electricity back on to the chandelier.
