How to Notify Social Security About a Change of Address

How to Notify Social Security About a Change of Address thumbnail
Notify Social Security if you move to a new address.

If you receive Social Security retirement, Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, or if you receive Medicare, you need to notify the Social Security Administration of any change of address promptly. If you have a Social Security claim pending, you also need to notify the agency of a change of address. If you do not receive benefits and do not have a claim pending, the Social Security Administration does not keep a record of your address so there is no need to notify the agency of any change.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 to report your new address.

    • 2

Visit your local Social Security Administration office to report a change of address in person if you prefer. See the Social Security Administration website to find your local office (See Resources).

    • 3

Report your change of address online if you prefer (See Resources). You must have a password to report a change of address online. You can get a password by phoning the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 or you can apply for one online. If you receive SSI benefits, however, you cannot change your address online.

Tips & Warnings

  • Notify the Social Security Administration of a change of address as soon as you know your new address. You can let the agency know when you will move to the new address. You don't have to wait until you've already moved to notify the agency of the change.
