How to Build a Bookshelf Door
Building a wooden door for a bookshelf is an easy way to add privacy and security to a collection of books. A door also keeps the volumes from being dislodged or falling off of the shelves and protects them from dust. A simple bookshelf door requires only basic carpentry skills and tools to build and install. The project can be completed in a weekend, but a well-built door can last for many years.

- 2 sheets of 2-inch-thick lumber
- Measuring tape
- Saw
- Paint or stain

Measure two sheets of wood that will fit over the front of your bookshelf. Each door should cover half of the bookshelf. Use wood that matches the wood of your bookshelf. Cut the wood to size and sand the edges if necessary.

Paint or stain the wood to match your existing bookshelf. This will help the bookshelf doors match the bookshelf without disrupting the decor of the room.

Allow the wood to dry for 24 to 48 hours before continuing. Even if paint or stain feels dry to the touch, it can stain the bookshelf if installed before it's properly cured.

Drill pilot holes in the front edge of the bookshelf for the hinges. Taller bookshelves may need three hinges, while shorter shelves will need only one or two. Ensure that the holes for the hinges are even across both sides of the shelves.

Attach the hinges to the bookshelf with screws. These will provide a place to hang the bookshelf door. Choose hinges that match your interior decor or blend in with the wood.

Drill pilot holes for the door handles on the front panel of the wood. Attach the door handles with screws. Handles will make it easier to open the bookshelf door.

Drill pilot holes in the edges of the bookshelf doors. Ensure that the holes match up with the hinges on the bookshelf.

Attach the doors to the hinges with screws. Ensure that all screws are flush with the wood.
