Instructions

    • 1

Clear everything out of the area of the basement that will be used as your wood shop. Locate the shop at the far end of the basement if possible, so that dust does not find its way into the rest of the house. Clean the area well, and update the area if it is an unfinished basement. Install walls and good lighting. Have an electrician install wiring and outlets if you are not qualified. Hire a plumber to install a sink and pipes unless you can do so yourself.

    • 2

Install cabinets and storage units to help organize tools and supplies, such as blades for the circular and other saws. Hang a peg board on a wall for items such as hammers. Set up counters or tables to use as work spaces. Place table saws and other heavy equipment in convenient locations within the shop, so you can get to them easily when working on projects. Have a wooden box in a handy location to hold scraps of wood, which can be used for later projects.

    • 3

Invest in good tools and other supplies for your wood shop. Consider items such as drills, screwdrivers and levels. Screws and nails will come in handy, as will nuts and bolts. Place these small items into drawers with small compartments to separate them, or in jars placed on a shelf. Hang wrenches and pliers if possible, or put them in drawers. Pick up a belt sander while shopping for shop needs, as well as clamps for holding projects tight while wood glue is drying.

Purchase a shop vac for clearing the area of small debris, and have plenty of rags on hand for wiping wood glue away. Have an area where you can wipe the dust off your clothes and out of your hair before entering the other rooms of your home. Keep safety goggles on hand at all times, as well as work gloves.
