How to Back Gooseneck Trailers

Gooseneck trailers are different than regular trailers because they are attached to the bed of a truck and they turn in the same direction that you steer. Their design also creates more stability when backing up as opposed to regular trailers. The downside is that the turns are much tighter and that can make them difficult to back up at first. Nonetheless, successfully backing up a gooseneck trailer is possible for most people when following a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust your rear view mirrors, so you have a clear view of what is behind your trailer.

    • 2

Roll down your driver side window, so you can look outside the vehicle when needed.

    • 3

Put your vehicle in reverse and slowly begin backing up.

    • 4

Place your hands on the bottom part of the steering wheel. Move the wheel right to go right and move the wheel left to go left. The trailer will move in whichever direction that you turn the wheel.

    • 5

Focus on your rear view mirrors as you guide the trailer backwards. Look outside the driver's window to ensure that the length of the trailer will clear the space that you are backing into.

    • 6

Move the steering wheel in the opposite direction when you need to straighten the trailer out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get someone to stand outside on the driver's side and help guide you if possible.

  • Take your time when backing up a gooseneck trailer. It's better to go a little slower than going fast and causing an accident.
