How to Build a Cheap Desktop

To cut costs, you can buy some computer parts at discount stores.

Whether you are technologically inclined or a novice and on a limited budget, building a computer from scratch may be your best computer option. Desktop computer parts are widely available and economical. Building a machine from scratch also lets you customize a computer to fit your needs.

Instructions

1. Decide what the computer will be used for. For school, you will need word processing software. If you are a gamer, you may want a better video card. A movie buff might want a full HD monitor. Knowing why you want the computer helps determine what is essential.

2. Determine where you can cut costs and where you are willing to spend. The processor, video card and monitor will usually be the most expensive components. A keyboard and mouse are inexpensive and can be found at discount stores.

3. Locate parts. Your local computer store may have inexpensive used parts. Newegg, eBay and Amazon (see Resources) are common places to find computer equipment online. This gives you an estimate of how much the PC will cost.

4. Salvage parts from other computers. Second-hand parts will free room in your budget. Pull a processor or stick of RAM from an old computer. Ask a friend if you can have his or her old computer case.

5. Download Ubuntu (see Resources), a free, user-friendly Linux operating system, on another computer and put it on a CD or flash drive to install on your new computer.
