How to Smudge With Photoshop

While some Photoshop users appreciate the software's ability to perform enhancements such as sharpening focus and removing dust specks, you may find yourself wanting to deliberately transform your picture the opposite way, by adding smudges. With Photoshop, part of the Adobe Creative Suite, there's no need to get your hands dirty. Smudging on screen requires just a couple of clicks through Photoshop's tools, and it can create quite a difference in your resulting artwork.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Photoshop software, click the "File" menu and click "Open." Browse to the photo or image that you want to smudge and double click the file name. The picture will open in the Photoshop workspace.

    • 2

Click the "Ctrl" and "+" keys on your keyboard to zoom in on the area of the picture to smudge, so it takes up the majority of your workspace.

    • 3

Click the "Smudge" tool, which looks like a pointing finger, on the "Tools" palette. If you do not see the pointing finger, right click an icon of a raindrop or hollow triangle. These three tools share the same space until they're used. From the tools' right click menu, select "Smudge Tool."

    • 4

Pull down the second menu from the left on the toolbar at the top of the screen; the smudge brush is not labeled, but it is directly to the right of the pointing finger on the toolbar. Select a smudge brush head, such as a solid, round head for sharp, easy to see smudges. Move the "Size" slider bar to your preferred smudge size -- the larger size, the more obvious the smudge. A smaller size will result in finer, more defined smudges.

    • 5

Hover your cursor over the area to smudge, press and hold down the left mouse button, and click and drag the cursor. The direction you drag, such as up or down, will be the direction of the smudge. The farther you drag, the longer the smudge will appear. Release the mouse button to end that specific smudge.

    • 6

Move your cursor to a new area, make any adjustments to the smudge brush head and repeat to add additional smudges to the image.

    • 7

Click the "File" menu and select "Save As." Give the picture a name; choosing a new name ensures you'll be able to access the original version in the future.
