How to Build a Lean-To on an Existing Shed
When you outgrow your existing shed, you may want to add a lean-to. This is a simple structure to create and can be completed in an afternoon. In most areas, there are no additional permits required to build this structure, so the entire process will be quick. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- 4-by-4 treated posts

Instructions

1
Cut two pieces of 4-by-4 post the height of the shed and bolt them vertically to one side, one on each corner. Use a level to ensure they are vertical.
-
2
Cut two pieces of 4-by-4 post approximately 3 feet long. Bury these 16 inches in the ground, approximately 6 feet away from the shed, directly in line with the corners of the shed wall.

-
3
Using the 2 by 4s, construct a frame the width of the shed and the distance from the top of the tall 4 by 4 to the top of the buried 4 by 4. Mount this frame to the top of all posts, using nails.
-
4
Add four cross beams to the frame using the 2 by 4s. These beams will act as support for the roofing panels.
-
5
Attach the roofing panels to the wood frame using roofing screws. The panels should be oriented in such a way that the long side runs downhill on the frame. Check for water leaks by running water down the surface of your lean-to, and repair accordingly.

Tips & Warnings
Measure all parts before you cut anything. Incorrect measuring will make this inexpensive project turn into a costly venture.
Do not leave anything valuable underneath this lean-to. Although it will keep the rain off, animals and blowing snow can get inside and damage expensive equipment.
