Gmail Is Rejecting My Password on Outlook

Gmail Is Rejecting My Password on Outlook thumbnail
It may not be that gmail is rejecting your password; it may be another simple setting.

So you're having a problem configuring your Microsoft Outlook software to load your Google Mail account, or Gmail. Gmail is one of the most widely used Web-based email platforms, and Outlook is one of the most widely used email software available today, and generally they work quite well together. Once you get through the initial settings--which can be frustrating due the exactness they require--you'll enjoy relatively trouble-free email as long as you use the computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your gmail account through a web browser to confirm your login and password are working correctly. Do this by visiting www.gmail.com.

    • 2

Click on the Settings link in the upper right hand corner of the window then, within the Settings window, click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Enable both of the following radio buttons: "Enable POP for All Mail" and "Enable IMAP". Click on Save Changes. Log out of your Gmail and close your browser.

    • 3

Reload your Microsoft Outlook and return to the email accounts window where you entered your username, password and other information to set up your Gmail account. Ensure that anywhere you enter your Gmail username that you always end it with @gmail.com. Though this isn't necessary in the Web-based login, this is necessary in Gmail.

    • 4

Re-enter your password carefully, ensuring that you are careful to use the correct case if your password has upper and lower case characters.

    • 5

Ensure that your incoming server is listed as pop.gmail.com for POP mail or imap.gmail.com (see the Tips for definitions). Either way, your outgoing server should be listed as smtp.gmail.com.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are two types of ways your Gmail can be delivered to your Outlook; POP or IMAP. POP, which stands for Post Office Protocol, simply drops off your mail, much like a postman does; your Gmail account and Outlook operate independently from each other. IMAP, which stands for Internet Mail Access Protocol, essentially syncs your entire Gmail account to your Microsoft Outlook. Any change made to one will be reflected in the other.
