How to Make Record Purses
Show your love of music and put an aging vinyl record to good use by turning it into a purse. You will need to use two 12-inch records for a large purse. If you want to experiment, try using two 7-inch records to make a smaller coin purse or pouch. The project requires only a small amount of sewing as the fabric lining is attached to the records with glue.
Things You'll Need
- 12-inch vinyl records, 2
- Ruler
- Laminate cutting blade
- 1/2 yard cotton fabric
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Fabric glue
- Drill with 3/16-inch drill bit
- 4 key chain rings
- 1 yard ribbon, 2 inches wide
Instructions

1
Measure down 3 or 4 inches from the center hole of one of the records. Position the ruler straight across the record and use the laminate cutting blade to slice off the bottom of the record. Repeat with the other record.
-
2
Fold the fabric in half with the right sides facing in. Place one record on top of the fabric and trace around it. Decide how wide you want the bottom of the purse to be and extend the length of the sides down half the width. For instance, if you want the purse to be 5 inches wide on the bottom, draw each side 2.5 inches below the bottom of the purse. Draw a line connecting the two sides. Cut out the fabric.

3
Cut a rectangle from the remaining fabric that measures the width of the purse by 22 inches.
-
4
Center the fabric rectangle on the larger piece of lining, so that the bottom part of the larger lining piece lines up with the middle of the rectangle. Place the wrong sides of the fabric together.
-
5
Sew the rectangle to the large lining piece, stitching along all four sides of the bottom. Line up the flaps of the rectangle with the side edges of the large lining piece and stitch the sides together. The wrong side of the lining should face out while the right side of the rectangle faces out.
-
6
Position one record over one wrong side of the lining piece. Dab fabric glue on the wrong side of the fabric and press onto the record. Repeat with the other record on the other side. Let dry for about 20 minutes.
-
7
Drill two holes on top of each record, spaced 4 inches apart. Thread a key chain ring through each hole.
-
8
Cut the ribbon into two 18-inch lengths. Knot one end of one piece to a key chain ring and then knot the other end to the other ring on the same record. Repeat on the other side of the purse.
