Go to the store to browse for the box of hair dye in the shade of brown that you want (light, medium or dark). Read the boxes carefully and look for a color with a neutral or cool tones. Stay away from colors that have warm tones, which will give your hair more of an auburn tint.

Snip off a small amount of hair, 1/8-inch wide by 1-inch long, from the bottom layer of your hair, so the missing piece isn't noticeable, and wrap a piece of clear tape around the end to keep it together. This will be the test swatch that you will use for your strand test.

Mix a small amount of the hair dye, according to the instructions that came with it and just enough to color the test swatch. Apply the dye to the test swatch and wait for the amount of time indicated in the instructions.

Rinse the dye out of the test swatch when the time is up and dry it with a hair dryer, so you can see what it will look like. If the test swatch is the shade of brown that you want without the auburn tones, mix the rest of the dye and apply it to your hair.
