How to View PPS Without Powerpoint
The PPS file extension, short for "power-point slide show," is the file type for PowerPoint presentations created by Microsoft PowerPoint. These slide shows are highly customizable, and can be used for business presentations, class assignments or personal projects. If you have a PPS file, you don't need the Microsoft Office program to open it or edit it. You can use an online document reader like Google Docs to open and view these presentations, or use a number of free tools that can be downloaded from the Internet.
Instructions
-
Use Google Docs
-
1
Open your Web browser, then type or paste "http://docs.google.com" into the address bar. This will take you to the Google Docs site.
-
2
Log in to the site using your Google account. If you don't have one, you can create one for free. A Google account gives you universal access to most Google features and applications.
-
-
3
Click the "Upload" button at the top of the page, select your PPS file from your computer, then click "OK."
-
4
Click the file in the Google Docs window, which will open the document in a window that allows you to edit it. You can make changes to the document here, or you can watch the slide show by clicking "View," then "Start presentation."
Use a Free Office Suite
-
5
Download a free office suite, like OpenOffice. This provides much of the same functionality as Microsoft Office, but is completely free.
-
6
Install the program on your computer. Perform a standard installation, but if you are still asked what specific programs to install, simply select them all, especially if you aren't sure which program has specific functionality.
-
7
Open the program in the suite that lets you use PowerPoint files. You may need to search the help documentation, or simply experiment (for example, in OpenOffice, the program you need to use is Impress). Open the PPS file using this program, and you will be able to edit, save and view it.
