How to Hang Window Shelves
Window shelves provide a plant lover and herb grower with extra space in sunny windows. They are hung on brackets or frames that are mounted to the window casing or area just above the casing on the wall. Many styles of shelves are available, but the mounting process is essentially the same. A secure mounting surface must be located, and the shelf structure and supports must be leveled and fastened to the mounting surface. - Tape measure
- Level
- Window shelf kit, with screws
- Drill
- 1/16-inch drill bit
- Screw gun

Measure an equal height on both sides of the window either on the casing or above the casing based on the instructions on the shelving package. The instructions will state the most effective position to mount your specific shelving unit. This measurement is to indicate where to mount the shelving unit. Mark the measurement with a pencil.

Hold the shelving unit in place on the pencil marks. Place a level on top of the unit so that it rests horizontally across it. Level the unit and mark the screw holes in the mounting brackets of the shelving unit.

Drill a 1/16-inch pilot hole approximately 1 inch deep at the marks for the screw holes.

Hold the shelving unit in place. Drive the provided screws through the holes in the mounting brackets to fasten the window shelving unit in place.

Insert the shelves onto the shelving unit frame.
