Polyurethane is a common finish used on hardwood floors. Polyurethane coats the wood flooring, protecting it from damage while giving it a clean shine. Unfortunately, the polyurethane finish can develop spots or stains from excess heat and moisture. The method of spot removal depends largely on how deep the spots are into the finish.   • Iron
  • White cotton towel

  • Wood wax
  • Fine sandpaper

Instructions

  1. Iron Method

    • 1

      Set your iron to a low setting and preheat for several minutes.

      Place a white cotton towel on the spots. Rub the preheated iron over the towel. Rub for several seconds. Lift the towel up and examine the spots. If the spots are still visible, lay the towel back down and continue rubbing with the iron until you have removed the spots.

      Polish the area of the hardwood floors as buff as you normally would.

    Steel Wool Method

      Rub the spots with a piece of 000 steel wool that has been dipped in wood wax. Rub gently with the grain of the wood. Continue with the remaining Steps if the spots are still visible on the finish.

      Rub the spots gently with fine sandpaper. Rub with the wood grain for several seconds. Pour mineral spirits into a small container. Dip the corner of a 00 steel wood in the mineral spirits. Rub the spots with the steel wool. Allow the area of the wood floor to dry completely.

      Wipe the area clean with a damp, cloth.

      Apply the correct color of stain to the area to match the rest of your hardwood floors. Allow the stain to dry completely. Wax the hardwood floors as you normally would and buff with a soft cloth.
