Reinstalling a Smoke Detector After Replacing the Battery
Battery-operated smoke detectors are an inexpensive way to give you and your home's occupants peace of mind when it comes to fire and smoke detection. Battery-operated detectors need no hard wiring and can be mounted directly to the ceiling or walls of you home. To ensure reliability when needed, the batteries should be replaced in your detectors once each year. The battery compartment is usually located within the detector, necessitating the removal of the detector from the mounting bracket for access. Does this Spark an idea?

Tips & Warnings
Some smoke alarms have a tamper resistant feature. This keeps the alarm from being removed from the mounting plate unless the tamper resistant feature is removed. On some models, remove the tamper resist pin from the mounting base of the alarm with a pair of needle nose pliers. Insert the pin into the notch on the edge of the smoke alarm. To remove the alarm in the future, the pin must be pulled out of the notch with a pair of needle nose pliers. The tamper resistant feature on other alarms may utilize four tabs on the inside of the cover that must be broken off with your fingers or a pair of pliers. Replace the cover as usual. To remove the cover, press in on the release tab on the side of the alarm while removing the cover.
Some alarms have a hinged cover that can be opened to replace batteries. If the cover becomes detached from the alarm, snap the hinged end of the cover back into place first, then swing the cover shut until it snaps into place.
