How Do I Prune Knockout Rose Shrubs?

Knockout rose shrubs provide a bevy of soft roses through the warm months of the year. After planting or replanting, the shrub needs adequate time to rebuild its root structure before pruning. Normally one year provides enough time for the shrub to become fully stable. Prune back Knockout rose shrubs in the springtime so the plant can grow to full glory during the summer.       Put on gardening gloves. Brush twigs and leaves from the Knockout rose shrub.

      Cut dead branches from the shrub with pruning shears. Pull or brush the cut branches from the shrub after cutting.

      Prune branches and canes back to 1/3 the size of the rose shrub. Start cutting from the top working down each side of the shrub. After pruning the shrub, cut older branches down to the base, allowing better air circulation within the shrub.

      Pick up cut branches and dispose of them in a trash receptacle.
