How do I Build A Natural Pond? thumbnail
Use a natural pond in the yard to attract wildlife.

A wildlife pond built in the backyard is usually small and for aesthetic appeal. Small ponds attract insects and small water fowl as well as frogs and other amphibians. You can add fish as well. Once the pond is built it is important to check the pH level of the pond water regularly to prevent the water from becoming imbalanced. Highly alkaline water will grow algae which may reduce oxygen supplies in the pond and kill wildlife. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find a spot in your lawn that gets good sunlight, has little shade and is not on a higher grade than the home to prevent flooding.

    • 2

Measure the area you wish to place the pond and draw an outline of its shape in chalk on the soil.

    • 3

Dig into the soil to a depth of 18 to 36 inches. Pile up the excess dirt around the perimeter of the pond in mounds to prevent water from coming out during rising waters. Use a tamper to compact the soil at the bottom of the pond area.

    • 4

Place a one inch layer of damp sand at the bottom of the hole to prevent punctures in the liner.

    • 5

Place a heavy, black vinyl liner into the hole. Determine the size of the liner by adding together the length and width of the pond. Multiply the depth by three and add that number to the length and width sum for the size of the liner. Place rocks on the edge of the liner while filling the pond.

    • 6

Fill the pond with water. Smooth out wrinkles in the liner while filling until it fits properly in the hole. Wait a few days before adding fish and plants.
