One of the easier approaches for the do-it-yourselfer is to use corner blocks, which are flat square pieces of wood that form the corners for you. Rather than miter cutting the trim, you can just cut it straight and set it against the corner blocks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your level along the top span of the doorway, so the two ends of the level extend out over the ends of the doorway. Mark along the level on the walls, so the plane of the top of the doorway extends out by three or four inches past the edge of the doorway.

    • 2

Hold the level vertically along one edge of the doorway, so it rises up past the top. Mark it on the wall. Do the same thing on the other vertical edge. The result should be corner marks positioned on the wall off each upper corner of the doorway, with the corner of the marks touching the corners of the doorway.

    • 3

Hold a piece of corner block trim on the wall over one top corner of the doorway, within the two lines, so the, block is perched off the upper corner of the doorway. Secure it in place with your trim nailer, shooting in three or four nails to hold it in place.

    • 4

Repeat the process for the corner block on the other upper corner of the doorway.

    • 5

Measure the span between two of the blocks horizontally over the doorway. Cut a piece of trim moulding at that length on your miter saw. Set the miter blade at 90 degrees and cut straight across the trim.

    • 6

Set the piece of trim horizontally between the two blocks, with the edge of the trim lined up along the top of the doorway. Secure the piece with your trim nailer. Repeat for the vertical trim on either side of the door, with the top end of the trim meeting the corner blocks on either side and the bottom meeting the floor.
