How to Talk to My Coach

Talking to any authority figure, such as a coach, is intimidating. However, if you need to ask a question, get advice or offer a suggestion, you have to approach your coach about it. While this is stressful, especially with tough coaches, part of the coach's job is to listen to his players. When approaching your coach, you need to exude confidence and speak clearly even if you're feeling nervous. The way you react when your coach responds is important as well.

1. Decide what you want to say before approaching your coach. If you don't prepare beforehand you risk stumbling over your words or not asking everything you want to, especially if you're nervous. Prepare all of your questions, and even write them down if you have to.

2. Approach your coach at a good time. Don't interrupt him in the middle of practice or while he's helping another player. Get to practice early or stay after if possible. If your coach is busy, ask when a good time to talk to him is.

3. Listen to the coach when he's answering you. Don't interrupt him or correct him. Wait until he's finished speaking to reply to him.

4. Don't respond emotionally. It's difficult to not react when someone criticizes you, but if your coach is trying to help you correct your weaknesses, simply listen and take in the information. He isn't trying to hurt your feelings; he wants you to improve.

5. Be polite. While you should always be courteous to other people, it's especially important to remember your manners around authority figures. Say "please" and "thank you" when necessary and thank your coach for his time when the conversation is over.
