Updating a Flash Player or a program is free. Upgrading to a newer version of Flash is not.

There are three ways to update Adobe Flash software. You can update a browser's Flash player, download Flash updates and patches, or upgrade to a newer version of Flash. Each method is different and completely separate of the others. Updating a browser's Flash player will allow you to view the most up-to-date Flash objects over the Internet. Downloading Flash updates and patches will fix minor glitches and bugs to an Adobe Flash program. Upgrading to a new Flash version will install a completely new program, such as CS5.

  1. Updating Your Flash Player

      Visit the Adobe Flash web page (see Resources). Click the "Install" button.

      Click "OK" to install a plug-in or download a simple application, depending on your browser. The plug-in should install automatically. If you downloaded an application, locate it on your computer and open it.

      Restart your browser to ensure the update installed successfully.

    Updating Adobe Flash Program

      Open your Flash program and click "Updates" from the "Help" tab in the menu at the top of the window. The updates utility will begin searching for any new updates automatically.

      Click "OK" once any new updates are found.

      Restart Adobe Flash to ensure the updates were installed correctly. If necessary, your computer will need to be restarted; the updates utility will notify you if this is the case.

    Updating Your Adobe Flash Version

      Visit the Adobe Flash products web page (see Resources). Click the "Buy/Upgrade" button and select the Flash Professional CS5 Upgrade option.

      Follow the on-screen instructions to submit your purchasing information and any other information required to verify your computer settings. Once complete, your computer will begin downloading the new version.

      Open the downloaded installation application and follow the on-screen instructions to successfully upgrade the Flash software. Your computer may need to be restarted; the installed program will notify you if this is the case.
