How to Make Resin Bottle Caps

How to Make Resin Bottle Caps thumbnail
Make jewelry from simple metal bottle caps.

Bottle caps offer just enough depth that you can fill them with small trinkets and decorations. Use transparent epoxy resin to seal in the contents of your bottle caps and then string them up on key chains, bracelets and necklaces as distinctive pendants and keepsakes. Resin bottle caps make great necklace pendants and key chain pendants that can tell a story depending on their contents.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your bottle cap inside and out and allow it to dry completely before continuing.

    • 2

Drill a small hole in the outside edge of the bottle cap and add a metal jump ring with your jewelry pliers.

    • 3

Arrange your decorations inside the bottle cap. Glue each element in place so that they do not move when you apply the epoxy resin. Examples of decorations include paper elements, magazine cuttings, small plastic trinkets, watch parts, feathers and beads.

    • 4

Mix your two-part epoxy resin according to the manufacturer directions. Create the resin in a separate container rather than directly in the bottle cap. Make a little more than you need to fill the bottle cap just in case you make a mistake.

    • 5

Add in your resin. Fill the cap completely if you are done adding elements to the bottle cap or halfway if you intend to add more elements and are not done yet. If there are bubbles in the resin, use a toothpick to pop them before the resin hardens.

    • 6

Let the resin harden to a tacky state. Add in any additional elements, especially if you want certain trinkets to "float" inside the resin rather than being pressed against the back.

    • 7

Fill in the rest of the bottle cap with epoxy resin. Pop any bubbles that appear while the resin mixture is still wet.
