How to Set Up a Saxophone Mouthpiece
Before you learn how to create the smooth tones of your saxophone, you need to know how to assemble the instrument correctly. After the neck is secured to the body, setting up the mouthpiece is the final step. With all the small and intricate pieces, setting up the saxophone mouthpiece may seem like a daunting task. After several assemblies, however, you should be ready to play in less than one minute.

1
Soak the thin end of the reed in your mouth. The reed needs to be moist in order to produce a good sound, and this process can be done while assembling the rest of the saxophone. Be very careful not to break or crack the reed, as damaged reeds do not function correctly.
-
2
Slide the mouthpiece halfway down the wood cork at the end of the neck. If the mouthpiece does not slide easily, twist it left and right until it reaches the halfway point. Make sure that the hole is facing down. Different players prefer various mouthpiece positions, but halfway is the standard positioning.

3
Once the reed is moist, place it flat side up against the bottom of the mouthpiece.
-
4
Align the rounded end of the reed with the end of the mouthpiece. To produce quality sound, make sure that the reed does not extend past the edge of the mouthpiece.
-
5
Hold the reed in position and slide the ligature around both the mouthpiece and the reed.
-
6
Twist the tightening knobs until the ligature is secure. The ligature needs to be tight enough to hold the reed in place, but not so tight as to keep the reed away from the mouthpiece.
-
7
Make any necessary adjustments. The reed often slides from its original position after tightening the ligature, so make sure that everything is still in alignment before playing the saxophone.
