How to Perform Makeup Techniques for Black Women thumbnail
Women with black skin tones must choose makeup colors that complement their complexion.

African American women and those with dark or black skin, have skin tones that range from light to dark across the color spectrum. Additionally, black skin is thicker textured and oilier than other skins. Cosmetics that suit white and pale skin tones do not suit black women. Black skinned women can enhance skin tones by choosing colors that complement the complexion and incorporating application techniques that highlight facial features. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Apply foundation on a clean face, choosing colors that match your skin undertone.

Opt for cool (blue color) undertones if you have a rich ebony complexion, and warmer (golden color) undertones if your complexion is brown.

    • 2

Dot your face and neck with the chosen foundation, using your finger or a concealer brush. Gently rub or massage the foundation all over your face using upward, back and forth strokes to blend it in.

    • 3

Dip a powder brush, puff or sponge in either loose or compact face powder. Tap the brush, puff or sponge to remove excess powder.

    • 4

Buff your entire face and neck, including the eyelids, gently with the powder for a flawless matte effect.

    • 5

Contour and highlight your cheekbones by dipping a blush brush in brownish-red blush. Smile, and gently rub the blush onto the apples of your cheeks, using a sweeping upward stroke.

    • 6

Apply a coffee or copper-colored lip gloss or lipstick in shades of dark plum, mocha, chocolate, burgundy and deep berry.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no need to apply a foundation if you have a flawless complexion.

  • Touch-up your face on-the-go with compact or pressed powder instead of loose powder.

  • For warmer complexions, use bronzers instead of a blush as an alternative.

  • Ensure that your powder/compact matches the color tone of your foundation.

  • Regularly clean your powder brush/puff/sponge, as unclean applicators collect dirt and bacteria and can clog your pores.

  • Avoid lip gloss in orange shades, as it gives a washed out appearance.
