How to Hydrate the Scalp
Itchy, flaky skin on the scalp, commonly known as dandruff, can actually be caused by dry skin, according to the Mayo Clinic website. Although dandruff can be annoying and embarrassing, when dry skin is the cause, it is often easily treatable. Hydrating the scalp can put an end to itchy, dry skin and unsightly flakes.

Heat two tablespoons of olive oil for a few seconds in the microwave.

Massage warm olive oil into the scalp and hair.

Wrap your head in a warm, damp towel. The Women's Healthcare Topics Web page recommends waiting about 30 minutes while the oil soaks into your skin and hair.

Shampoo your hair thoroughly to remove any flakes. The Mother Nature website suggests lathering and rinsing twice if you are using a medicated dandruff shampoo.

An overabundance of fungus on the scalp, seborrheic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis can cause excessive dandruff, according to WebMD. See a doctor if you experience lesions on your scalp or if you develop extreme redness, silvery scale-like patches or yellow, greasy flakes.
