How to Set Up a Fax Line
Setting up a fax line is a simple process. There are two methods. The first way uses the computer's modem to send and receive faxes. The second way uses a traditional phone cord and jack for sending and receiving faxes. Both set up methods are simple and will only take a few minutes. Make sure to test the connection to ensure that you are sending and receiving all the messages.

1
Connect your phone line to your fax machine and the computer. The line leading to the computer modem should be the "Line In" slot. The other line should lead to the phone jack.
-
2
Click the "Start" menu, then click "Programs." Open the "FAXmaker for Exchange" program. Your fax configuration may have a slightly different name, but it should have the word FAX in it some place.

3
Open the "Lines or Devices" tab and right-click "Properties." Click "Detect" to find the modem connected to your computer. Wait until the program detects your modem. Click the modem that you want to use.
-
4
Test the fax machine to make sure a fax can go through. If it does not, check all connections and try the online connection again. This will send all fax messages through the computer. If you have a specialized program, you should also be able to read faxes on your computer without printing them.

Make sure your phone outlets work. Do this by connecting a phone to the jack and listening for the dial tone. Disconnect all phones and cords leading to the jack that you plan to use for the fax line.
-
6
Connect the fax machine to the phone jack with a standard phone cord.
-
7
Connect the phone to the fax machine with an additional phone cord. Place the cord for the phone in the "Extension" slot on the back or bottom of the fax machine. Your fax machine should now be able to send and receive faxes; you also should be able to make calls on the phone.
