A great red lipstick is a lot like a little black dress. You may not need it often, but sometimes you want a showstopper. It will always look beautiful and classic, you can wear it as much as you want, but you must find the right one. Realistically, the best way to try a red lipstick is to try it on yourself, but not all of us have that luxury. Below is a guide to help you before you even pick the tube of lipstick up. Are you cool-toned or warm toned?

Figure out what type of skin tone you have. Generally, skin tones are either warm or cool, but some people are truly neutral.

Look at your wrist. Do you seem to have rosy undertones, or are your undertones yellowish? Many pale women tend to have rosy undertones, which means they are cool. Women with olive or tawny complexions are warm.

Look for the right lipstick shade.
If you think you have cool tones, you'll need to search for a blue-based red (more pink than orange). These reds are generally pink-red, berry-red, brick-red, etc.
If you think you have warm tones, search for a yellow-based red (more orange than pink). Those would be orange-red, warm-red, golden-red, brown-red, tomato-red, etc.
If you think you are neutral, a true red would work best for you.
