If you have decided to lay in some cement patio slabs, the first part of the process---once your design and placement are set---is to determine the amount of cement you will need. For most projects, cubic yards are used for cement volumes. The calculation process involves measuring the patio in feet, determining the depth and then converting that measure into cubic yards.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
Measure the length and width of your patio in feet.
Multiply the length by the width to get the overall area of the slab. For example, if your patio slab is to be 30 feet by 20 feet, the area is 600 square feet.
Decide what the depth of the patio will be, and multiply the depth in feet by the area to get the total volume of cement you will need for the slab. An average depth is 4 inches, which is one-third of a foot, or about 0.33 feet. In this example, 0.33 feet times 600 square feet is about 200 cubic feet of volume.
Convert your total slab volume in cubic feet to cubic yards. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so divide the volume by 27. In this example, 200 cubic feet comes out to 7.41 cubic yards of cement.
