Mix grass seeds for homemade Chia Pets.

Chia Pets are charming ceramic figurines that grow grass for hair or fur. The figurines eventually require more seeding, which can get expensive. Keep down costs and keep your home green by creating your own Chia Pet and Chia Pet seed. Kids will enjoy helping out with the simple process.

  • Rye grass seed
  • Wheat grass seed
  • Chia seed
  • Measuring cups
  • 1-gallon plastic tub

Instructions

    • 1

Scoop up about 1 cup each of wheat, rye and chia grass seed. Pour each cup into the bottom of a 1-gallon plastic tub. Mix the seeds together with your hands, stirring them thoroughly so the mixture covers the bottom of the tub. If it doesn't, add another cup of each seed.

    • 2

Fill your plastic tub about halfway with water. Allow the seeds to soak for about 24 hours. Dip your hand into the water; it should come back up completely coated with seeds that are full of water and slightly sticky.

    • 3

Drain the water from your seeds and mix your seeds with about 4 cups of dirt. If you used 6 cups of seeds, use 8 cups of dirt. Mix the seeds and soil thoroughly with your hands. You should be able to scoop up a random handful of soil and see the seeds studding the surface.

    • 4

Cut the last 6 inches from the feet of several pairs of nylons. Scoop up a handful or two of soil and fill each nylon toe with the mixture. Tie off the open end of each nylon pocket and set the pockets, tied-end down, into a plant pot.

    • 5

Pour about an inch of water into each plant pot. In about a week, your nylon pockets should be covered in grass from your homemade seed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decorate your nylon pockets with plastic eyes and other facial features to make Chia Pets with "personalities."

  • Create original planters by soaking unglazed terra cotta pots in water overnight. Coat them inside and out with a layer of homemade Chia Pet seed. Place the pot on a ceramic flood tray and water the pot through the drain hole. Grass should start to sprout all over your pot.
