Hardwood floors, though an attractive addition to a home, require maintenance periodically so that the finish appears smooth and mark free. Things like moving a piece of furniture or walking across the floor with a rock in the bottom of your shoe will cause clusters of scratch marks on the floor. Luckily, this is a job that can be done yourself using a few simple tools found at any home improvement store. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Sand paper
  • Steel wool
  • Soft cloth
  • Mineral spirits solution
  • Small paintbrush
  • Floor finish

Instructions

      Scrub the area over the scratches with a piece of sandpaper or steel wool. Use strong, circular motions until the entire area is textured and rough.

      Pour some mineral spirits solution on to a soft cloth. Rub the newly sanded area with the wet cloth to remove the pieces of grit. Allow the solution to air dry. Drying time varies with the severity of the scratch and can take as long as two hours.

      Dip a small paintbrush into the finish that was originally used on the hardwood floor and gently paint over the scratches. Spread the finish around on the scratch until it blends in with the floor around it. Allow to dry.
