How to Make Your Own Hydroponics Box
In Greek mythology, first woman Pandora releases evil on mankind when curiosity compels her to open a box she received as a "gift" from the gods. A hydroponics box is very different from Pandora's mythical box. In it, you can grow vegetables, fruit and all manner of green things. Making a hydroponics box is simple and inexpensive. You can build a hydroponics box using items you may find in your garage or attic. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Styrofoam cooler
- Aquarium stone
- Screw driver
- Pencil
- 4 Net baskets
- Vermiculite
- 4 plants
- Utility knife
- Hydroponic nutrient solution

Punch a hole in a styrofoam cooler lid's corner just large enough to admit the tubing for an aquarium stone.

Place four net baskets upside down on the lid of the aquarium stone. Trace around the net baskets with a pencil.

Cut holes in the lid slightly smaller than the circles you made using the net baskets.

Place the net baskets upright in the holes you have punched in the lid. Fill them with vermiculite.

Hollow out a planting hole in the vermiculite in the center of each net basket. Rinse the soil away from the plants and place them in the vermiculite. Cover the roots with the vermiculite.

Slip the tubing through the hole in the corner of the lid. Attach one end to the airstone and place the stone into the cooler.

Fill the cooler with liquid nutrients. Turn on the air stone to oxygenate the nutrients.

Place the lid on the cooler. The bottoms of the net baskets should be suspended in the liquid nutrients.
