This member of the oregano family is grown for its looks, not for cooking. Summer flowers are purple or pink, and the plant grows best in full sun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Choosing Origanum

Step1
Buy plants in containers. Pots should be 6-inch to one-gallon size.
Step2
Look for plants in nurseries in spring and summer.
Step3
Choose healthy-looking plants with signs of new growth of leaves and flowers.

Planting Origanum

Step1
Plant in full sun in sharp-draining soil (soil that does not stay soggy after watering).
Step2
Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
Step3
Place the plants 6 to 12 inches apart.
Step4
Set the plants no deeper than they were growing in the containers.
Step5
Water thoroughly - until the soil is completely moist.

Caring for Origanum

Step1
Water thoroughly - until the soil is completely moist - each week during the first summer if there is no rainfall.
Step2
Refrain from watering regularly after that - ornamental oregano prefers dry soil.
Step3
Cut off old stems in early spring using a bypass pruner; leave 3 inches of stem.
Step4
Do not fertilize - this is a tough plant!
