Grow Coral Bells (Heuchera)

Coral bells are an invaluable plant for the sunny rock garden, to line a path or in the light shade of a woodland. Their evergreen leaves have scalloped edges. In spring, tall, thin flower stalks rise up with tiny blooms on them, giving a frothy look.

    Choosing Coral Bells

  1. Step 1

Shop for coral bells throughout the year in mild climates or in the spring in colder regions.

  2. Step 2

Look for coral bells in 4-inch to one-gallon containers.

  3. Step 3

Look for evenly colored foliage, without any green if you want a purple-leafed variety.

  4. Step 4

Shop in spring to choose just the right shade of red flowers.

  5. Planting Coral Bells

  6. Step 1

Plant coral bells in well-drained soil in sun or light shade.

  7. Step 2

Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.

  8. Step 3

Use coral bells as an edger at the front of a border, plant a single plant in the rockery, or group a few together for more impact.

  9. Step 4

Water weekly throughout the first summer.

  10. Caring for Coral Bells

  11. Step 1

Add a light application of organic fertilizer in the spring.

  12. Step 2

Put a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch, such as compost, on the soil around the plant in spring. Do not cover up the center of the plant.

  13. Step 3

Cut back the flower stalks after blooming with bypass pruners for a second flowering later in the season.

  14. Step 4

Dig up new clumps to replant in another part of the garden or to pot up to give away to a friend.
