How to Grow Gaura (Gaura Lindheimeri)

A long-blooming perennial (meaning it grows back year after year), gaura grows to 4 feet and spreads 2 to 3 feet, with long wands of light- or dark-pink flowers. It flowers late spring through summer.

Choosing Gaura

1. Buy gaura in 6-inch or 1-gallon containers.
2. Look for the plants in nurseries during spring and summer, and year-round in mild climates.

Planting Gaura

3. Plant in spring in a sunny place in the garden.
4. Remove the plant from the container by rapping the sides and sliding it out.
5. Break up pot-bound roots by dragging a hand cultivator - a tool that looks like a claw - down the sides of the pot.
6. Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
7. Set the plants no deeper than they were growing in the container.
8. Place plants 1 to 2 feet apart.
9. Water well until the soil is completely moist.

Caring for Gaura

10. Water weekly during dry summers.
11. Cut back the old stems in late fall or early spring all the way to the ground, using bypass pruners.
12. Apply organic fertilizer in the spring; follow the package directions for amount.
