A long-blooming perennial (meaning it grows back year after year), gaura grows to 4 feet and spreads 2 to 3 feet, with long wands of light- or dark-pink flowers. It flowers late spring through summer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Choosing Gaura

Step1
Buy gaura in 6-inch or 1-gallon containers.
Step2
Look for the plants in nurseries during spring and summer, and year-round in mild climates.

Planting Gaura

Step1
Plant in spring in a sunny place in the garden.
Step2
Remove the plant from the container by rapping the sides and sliding it out.
Step3
Break up pot-bound roots by dragging a hand cultivator - a tool that looks like a claw - down the sides of the pot.
Step4
Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
Step5
Set the plants no deeper than they were growing in the container.
Step6
Place plants 1 to 2 feet apart.
Step7
Water well until the soil is completely moist.

Caring for Gaura

Step1
Water weekly during dry summers.
Step2
Cut back the old stems in late fall or early spring all the way to the ground, using bypass pruners.
Step3
Apply organic fertilizer in the spring; follow the package directions for amount.
