Giant hyssop is a sun-loving flowering plant that blooms in summer in shades of coral, red and purple. It has tall flower spikes - to 3 feet - covered with small, tubular blossoms.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Choosing Giant Hyssop

Step1
Shop for giant hyssop in spring and summer in nurseries.
Step2
Look for plants in containers ranging from 4 inches in diameter to 1-gallon size.
Step3
Choose healthy-looking plants with no wilted foliage. Stems should have flowers almost to the base of the plant.

Planting Giant Hyssop

Step1
Plant giant hyssop in full sun in well-drained soil.
Step2
Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
Step3
Loosen pot-bound roots by dragging a hand cultivator - a tool that looks like a claw - down the sides.
Step4
Place plants no deeper than they were growing in the containers.
Step5
Set plants 6 to 12 inches apart.
Step6
Water well until soil is completely moist.

Caring for Giant Hyssop

Step1
Cut back stems in early spring with bypass pruners. Leave 4 to 6 inches remaining.
Step2
Cut off flowering stems when they are finished to the first set of leaves. This will produce more flower stems.
Step3
Protect container plants from cold winters by placing in a protected spot against the house or by wrapping the container in bubble-wrap used for mailing.
