How to Trim Weeping Willows

How to Trim Weeping Willows thumbnail
Prune weeping willows to encourage healthy growth.

Weeping willow trees need to be trimmed, or pruned, in the late summer or early fall, when the tree is dormant. According to the Orchard's Edge website, willows, especially young willow trees, need pruning to develop a strong central trunk and strong upper branches. Willows also need pruning to prevent a dense tangle of branches at the top of the tree, which will make your willow more susceptible to high winds and snow or ice damage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Step back from the tree and examine its shape. Do this before beginning--and often during--the trimming process. This helps you maintain a balanced, even shape.

    • 2

Trim back any trailing branches that touch the ground or will get in the way of pedestrians, vehicles, or other things that will pass beneath the tree.

    • 3

Remove any branches growing straight up.

    • 4

Cut branches that rub against each other. Remove the smaller of the rubbing branches and cut it as close to the trunk as possible.

    • 5

Remove lower branches, especially on young trees, to encourage a single trunk and strong upper branches. Cut branches close to the trunk.

    • 6

Cut off suckers at the base of the tree, and anywhere else they may appear. Suckers are small branches that usually grow from the base of the tree and sometimes have different leaves than the main part of the tree. This should be done as soon as you notice the suckers.
