How to Germinate Arisaema Seeds
Arisaema is a genus of strange-looking flowering plants whose species are commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or cobra lily. One of the interesting aspects of the arisaema is the ability of some species to change sexes repeatedly throughout their lives. Arisaema thrives in shady areas in warm climates and can tolerate full sun where it is cool. There is a dormant period when the plant will turn yellow and appear to be dying. It is important to cease watering during this period and allow the plant to rest. Despite its elaborate appearance, arisaema is a surprisingly easy plant to propagate from seed. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Small bowl
- 4-inch planting pot
- Seed germinating potting mix
- Grit, such as cat litter
Instructions
-
-
1
Soak the seeds in a bowl of water for 48 hours. Change water twice during that time.
-
2
Combine 3 parts of seed germinating mix with 1 part grit. Pour it into the planting pot, to within 3/4 inch of the rim, and add water until the seed-starting medium is completely saturated. Set the pot aside until the soil drains completely.
-
-
3
Sow the seed on the surface of the soil and cover it with 1/4 inch of the grit or sand.
-
4
Place the pot in the bag, seal and leave it in a well-lit area, but out of direct sun. If you have grow lights, set them for a 14-hour day and place the pot 6 inches beneath the lights. Check the soil periodically to make sure it remains moist. The arisama seed should sprout in four to eight weeks, depending upon species.
