How to Choose Stainless Flatware
Stainless flatware can last a lifetime if treated properly. It is easier to care for than silver because it does not tarnish easily.
Stainless steel flatware comes in many styles--some handles are elaborate, while other handles are very simple, with few flourishes. You can also find stainless flatware with wood or colored plastic handles.

1
Look online or in catalogs to find a pattern suitable for your needs. For example, when choosing a pattern for everyday use, ease of cleaning is important. Styles that have few swirls and other embellishments and indentations clean up a little easier than elaborately designed flatware.
-
2
Print off a picture of the pattern, or draw a sketch of the pattern on a piece of paper. Write down the name of the pattern or designer.

3
Find a local store that sells flatware. See if they have a design close to the one you want. You can order flatware online, but it's useful to see it and handle it before purchasing.
-
4
Pick up pieces of the flatware to check their weight and general feel. Flimsy flatware can bend out of shape or even break. Gently test areas that are typically weak points, such as the joint where the head of a spoon meets the handle. If it bends with gentle pressure, it may not be good quality stainless steel.

5
Ask the seller about all warranties on the flatware before you make your decision to buy. You may also wish to check around to other stores for lower prices on the same set.

Tips & Warnings
Wood or plastic handles on ill-designed sets may fit a little loose and trap dirt and moisture between the handle and the underlying stainless steel. This may eventually lead to corrosion, limiting the life-span of the flatware.
Flatware sets may contain only knives, spoons and forks, or they may also contain large serving spoons and ladles.
