Replace Wind Savers on a Harmonica

Wind savers on the chromatic harmonica save breathing effort. If you notice that a draw or blow tone pops, you can be sure that moisture has caused the wind savers to flutter or stick against the reed plate. Here's how to fix that common problem without having to buy a new harmonica.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a needle or hat pin to lift the wind savers so that moisture can evaporate.

    • 2

Use a knife or screwdriver to pry up the wind savers.

    • 3

Remove as much old glue as possible.

    • 4

Write to the manufacturer requesting new wind savers. Straightening bent wind savers is difficult, as is obtaining wind savers from a music store.

    • 5

Use fast-drying glue to attach new wind savers. Just a slight wiping with the glue will do.

    • 6

Put the glue on the wind savers - never on the reed plate.

    • 7

Make sure the wind savers sit straight and cover the reed slot.
