Measure an existing flag that fits the hanger you have in your yard. Add 3-1/4 inches to the top for the hanger and 1/4 inch to each of the three remaining sides. Cut out a solid piece of canvas or burlap using this measurement.
-
2
Fold 1/4 inch to the back of the flag on the two sides and the bottom and press with an iron. Zigzag stitch the folded edges to secure the hems.

3
Fold 1/4 inch to the back of the flag on the top edge and press. Fold the top 3 inches to the back and pin. Zigzag stitch along the pinned edge to create a casing for the hanger.
Decorating the Flag

4
Draw or trace shapes of your choice to the paper side of lightweight fusible web. If letters are used, flip them over to a mirror image before tracing. Rough cut around each shape at least a 1/2 inch larger on all edges.
-
5
Lay a fabric scrap with the wrong side up on your ironing surface. Place a fusible web shape on the fabric with the paper side up. Iron the fusible web to adhere it to the fabric. Cut around the shape on the traced lines. Repeat with each traced fusible web shape.
-
6
Peel the paper backing from the fused fabric shapes. Lay the flag with the right side facing up. Place the shapes on the flag with the front of the fabric shapes facing up and arrange as desired. Iron the shapes to adhere them to the flag.
-
7
Zigzag stitch around the edges of each of the shapes to secure.
