How do I Put Lights on an Artificial Tree?

How do I Put Lights on an Artificial Tree? thumbnail
The key to stringing Christmas tree lights is to make them even and blend them into the tree.

When it comes to the holiday season, there is nothing more comforting, traditional or in the holiday spirit as a lit-up Christmas tree. Whether you choose small twinkling white lights or large colorful bulbs, stringing lights on a tree is done the same way. It is easier to string an artificial Christmas tree rather than a real tree, as you don't have to deal with the extreme scratchiness of the pine needles and you can always leave them on for years to come. A good rule of thumb is to use a strand of 100 lights for every vertical foot of the tree. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose Christmas tree lights based on what works best for you. You can use stacked plugs or end-to-end plugs. Stacked plugs allow you to string together and attach more strands of lights, while end-to-end plugs are less expensive sometimes and better suited to smaller trees. Always check the boxes of lights to make sure they're all compatible.

    • 2

Position the artificial tree where you want it to sit, and make sure it is by a wall outlet. Position all the branches as you desire, making sure they are attractive and molded outward.

    • 3

Lay out all of your light strands in a row, so when you are stringing one strand and you run out of lights, you can immediately pick up an additional strand to connect it and continue putting lights up.

    • 4

Plug in the first light set. Start at the base of the trunk, wrapping lights up and around until you reach the first lowest set of branches. Weave the light strand in and out of the branches while you work your way around the tree, tucking the strands along the length of each branch before moving to the next one.

    • 5

Move up onto the second lowest set of branches on the artificial tree. Repeat the process, working one branch at a time. Wrap the strands around the branches and try to hide them as best you can, almost making them blend into the tree.

    • 6

Start a new strand of lights once you end one, connecting the light plug to the other's socket. These bulky plugs are what you need to blend in among the tree branches.

    • 7

Continue your way up the tree, in and out of each branch until you reach the top. Look over your work, positioning lights so they are spaced evenly as much as possible and blended into the tree.
