How to Make Petal Cones
Petal cones offer an elegant alternative to throwing rice or blowing bubbles at weddings. At the end of the ceremony, each wedding guest gets a paper cone filled with flower petals or dried lavender and tosses them in the air as the newlyweds pass. The cones themselves may be plain white, tea-dyed parchment paper or delicate pink tissue. You can personalize the cones by filling them with petals from the types of flowers used in the wedding bouquet and using paper that matches the wedding colors.
Things You'll Need
- Paper (such as parchment, patterned stationery, old sheet music)
- Double-sided tape
- Fresh flowers

1
Lay a sheet of 9-inch-by-11-inch paper in front of you on a flat, clean surface. Tilt it to the left so the longer left edge is on a diagonal, with the lower left corner pointing toward the right side of your stomach. Tear off a three-inch strip of double-stick tape and press it down along the middle of the longer right edge.

Grip the lower-left corner of the paper between your thumb and forefinger. Hold down the center of the paper's bottom edge with the first two fingers of your other hand. Bring the lower left corner up and to the right until the lower edge of the paper bumps into the fingers holding it down. Turn the lower-left corner down and in to start your cone.

Roll the started cone until the entire sheet of paper is rolled together. Press the upper right edge against the outside of the cone to seal it closed with the double-stick tape. There should be a hollow space at the upper end of the cone large enough to fit your hand inside.

Grip the flower petals on your fresh flowers one or two at a time, near the base. Tug gently but firmly until the petals come free. If you pull too hard, the petals may rip. Slip the petals into the paper cones, continuing until all of the cones are full.

Tips & Warnings
For added decoration, cut the top of each cone straight and even with pinking shears. Scalloped shears give the edging an elegant touch.
Fill your cones with dried petals or dried flowering herbs to save time. You can make your petal cones well in advance this way and store them in a cool, dark place until the wedding.
