How to Protect a Pool Fence

Protecting the fence around a swimming pool requires some work.

Pool fences are a vital safety component when you own a swimming pool. Many states, including New York and California, require that a fence be installed around a swimming pool as a way of preventing the accidental drowning of children and animals. Pool fences can be made of chain link, wood planks or other materials, but what they have in common is being susceptible to damage. As a pool owner, it requires some diligence to protect your fence and ensure it stays in top condition.

Instructions

1. Build your fence far enough away from the pool to ensure it won't be splashed with excessive water. Metal fences can rust over time and wooden fences can rot if they gets damp for an extended period.

2. Keep the area around your fence well-lit at night to dissuade animals from approaching it or vandals from damaging it.

3. Cut away any weeds or plant life from around the base of your fence. Plants retain water and also provide shade, meaning they can cause fence rust or rot, which then requires repair.

4. Repaint your fence every two years to keep it looking new. The combination of chemicals from the pool, the elements and sunlight can cause the paint of your pool fence to fade or chip.

5. Clean your fence monthly to eliminate any dust or dirt buildup. The method may vary depending on the type of fence you have, but a hose will normally get rid of dirt deposits and the sun will dry the fence quickly.
