Hauling a haul bag up a mountain is not the most pleasent activity in the world, but it is absolutely necessary for climbing big walls.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Hauling the haul bag

  1. Step 1

Slide the ascender that is clipped to your harness high on the rope, almost up to the pulley.

  2. Step 2

Put your feet against the wall and push out with your legs while sink down in a sitting position. Use your body weight to aid you as much as possible.

  3. Step 3

As you push out and sit down, the bag will raise about a foot.

  4. Step 4

Once at the bottom of your pulling stroke, stand up and pull the slack through the ascender attached to your harness. Ascender A will hold the weight of the bag when you stand up.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps 8-11 until you have raised the bag all the way, or decided it's too much like physical labor and head for the lounge.

  6. Set Up the Haul System

  7. Step 1

Make sure you are clipped into an anchor.

  8. Step 2

Set your anchors for the haul system. Make sure these anchors are strong as you will be putting a great deal of weight on them. It's best if you equalize this system.

  9. Step 3

Attach a pulley to the anchor system an put the haul line through this pulley.

  10. Step 4

Attach a mechanical ascender to the haul line. Attach the ascender upside down, on the side of the pulley closest to the bag and clip the ascender to the anchors. This ascender (ascender A), should be attached to the rope about a foot down from the pulley.

  11. Step 5

Attach some weight to ascender A to keep it from coming up with the rope when you pull on the rope. Your rack is an appropriate amount of weight.

  12. Step 6

Attach ascender B to the rope, right side up, on the side of the pulley farthest away from the bag, and clip this ascender to the front of your harness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your choice in pulleys could make a difference. Get a pulley specifically made for hauling. Make sure it has a bearing and it's easy to use.
  • Dont drop the pulley while you're setting up. It could ruin your partners life if it hits him or her.
