How to Apply for a Business License in Hawaii

Apply for a Hawaii business license before you begin your new business.

To operate a business in Hawaii, you must first apply for a state business license. It takes minimal time to complete the one-page application as long as you have a definite idea of what your business name will be, the type of business and the filing period declaration. You can begin operating your business as soon as the application is approved--which is normally the same day you submit it.

Instructions

1. Go to Hawaii's website and navigate to Form BB-1, the State of Hawaii Basic Business Application. Complete the form and print it out. You can also go to your district's Department of Taxation and obtain and complete a form there.

2. Take the completed application to the clerk, who will then review your application. Pay the clerk a one-time registration fee of $20 and receive a certified copy of the application that will show your business tax identification number that assures you are now a legal business owner in Hawaii.

3. Display your new business license at your establishment which you should receive in about two weeks.
