Beads are an ideal and practical way to transform a plain shirt into a piece of art. Bead embellishments also can turn an inexpensive piece of clothing into a designer-like garment. You can personalize a shirt with a bead embellishment and present it as a gift to a friend. Best of all, sewing bead embellishments doesn't require any special skills. If you can thread a needle, you can embellish a shirt.
Trace or draw the design with a pencil onto the area of the shirt you want to embellish.
2
Use an embroidery hoop. This step is optional; although you can sew the beads without it, using an embroidery hoop will give you better control of the fabric. Position the inner hoop on the fabric's underside. Attach the outer hoop from the top of the fabric, pulling lightly so that the fabric is taut. The design should be in the center of hoop.
3
Thread your needle and knot the longer end of the thread.
4
Insert your needle through the back of the fabric so that it comes up through the fabric's face. Insert the needle through the first bead. Backstitch, or insert the needle through the face of the fabric to the back side, next to the thread. Make sure the bead is positioned as desired.
5
Bring the needle back up through the face of the fabric next to your first bead. Insert your needle through the second bead and backstitch again. Follow the same procedure until you have sewn beads to the entire design.
6
Knot the thread on the fabric's underside after you sew the last bead. Remove the embroidery hoop.
Tips & Warnings
Avoid sewing the beads too tightly.
Match the thread color to the beads and fabric as closely as possible.
