How to Troubleshoot a Speedstream Modem

How to Troubleshoot a Speedstream Modem thumbnail
The back of a modem typically contains one input and four output ports.

A Speedstream Modem is a device that allows your computer to connect through the internet by using an ethernet cord. When the Speedstream Modem is not correctly functioning, you'll be unable to access the internet. The Speedstream Modem allows up to four computers to simultaneously connect to the internet. Before you begin troubleshooting the modem, you should make sure the computer is not the problem. Check this by testing different computers -- if none are able to connect, it is a problem with the modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Restart the modem by pressing the power button near the back.

    • 2

Watch the four LED lights at the front. If the modem is working correctly, all four of these lights will blink green on start up. Wait until the start up is finished. This will take about 30 seconds.

    • 3

Check the LED lights again. Both the power and DSL lights should be solid green. If there is a device connected to the router by ethernet, the ethernet light should be blinking green. If a USB device is connected, the USB light should be blinking green.

    Power Light Not On

Confirm that the power cord is plugged into the wall.

    • 5

Confirm that the power cord is plugged into the router.

    • 6

Check the power cord for any breaks. If the power cord is fine and the modem is still unable to power up, you'll need to contact Siemens for a new modem.

    DSL Light Not On

    • 7

Check to make sure your DSL cord is connected to the modem.

    • 8

Check to make sure the DSL cord is connected to the wall.

    • 9

Contact your internet provider. If the DSL light doesn't come on when the cord is plugged in, that means that no data is being transferred between the router and your internet provider.

    USB/Ethernet Light Not On

    • 10

Check to make sure a USB or Ethernet device is attached to the router. This light will blink green when a device is attached to it.

    • 11

Check to make sure a USB or Ethernet device is attached to the computer that is attempting to access the internet.

    • 12

Plug the ethernet cable into different ports on your Speedstream Modem and see if that makes a difference. Sometimes certain ports won't function.

    Reboot the Router

    • 13

Turn the router off by pressing the power switch at the back. Wait ten seconds for the router to completely power down.

    • 14

Turn the router back on. It will perform a POST (power-on self-test). Watch the power LED light during this time.

    • 15

Call Siemens if the light remains solid red for two minutes. This means that the self-test failed, and you'll need to contact customer support in order to get a representative to guide you through the process of unlocking the modem.
