How to Tie a Navy Handkerchief
Navy handkerchiefs are worn around the neck by servicemen, identifying them as sailors. These handkerchiefs are folded and tied in a loose knot that rests on the chest. It first appeared on the scene as a sweat band and a means to close a collar. Navy servicemen currently wear solid black handkerchiefs for their dress uniform, and women serving wear solid black handkerchiefs as part of their summer uniform.

1
Fold the Navy handkerchief diagonally, making a triangle. Roll the triangle beginning at the largest angle of the triangle. Roll until you make one, long strip of handkerchief.
-
2
Place the rolled handkerchief around your neck, under your collar if you have one. Tug the right side so that it is about four fingers longer than the left side.
-
-
3
Cross the longer right side over the shorter left side. Rest the cross at the "V" in your collar.
-
4
Push the longer side up under the cross and pull it through the opening and to the left. This completes the first part of the knot.
-
5
Cross the long end over the short end once again, leaving a space between the first part of the knot and the cross. Push the long end up under the cross and pull it through the loop formed between the cross and the first part of the knot.
-
6
Pull loosely until the knot forms. Adjust the knot so it is square-shaped and even with the "V" in your collar and the "V" that the handkerchief forms above your knot. Also adjust the ends so that they are even.
