1
Choose the right curler for you. Electric curlers use heat to activate curl fairly quickly. Foam curlers take longer to make hair curl. Vented curlers allow heat from a hair dryer to set the curl in place. The size of the curlers you use is important as well. Smaller curlers create tighter curls, and larger curlers create bigger, looser curls.

2
Place a dollop of mousse (about the size of an egg) into your palm and spread it through your hair with your fingers. Mousse helps to create volume and hold. Another option is to spread a quarter-sized dollop of styling gel through your hair instead. Gel also helps to hold curl, and it cuts down on frizz as well. While you can use mousse or gel on dry hair, both products work best if your hair is slightly damp.

3
Separate a quarter-inch section of your hair from the rest of your hair with a comb. Comb through the section once or twice to make sure it is free from tangles.
-
4
Place the ends of your hair from the separated section onto a curler and hold the hair to the curler with your thumbs. If you plan to create curls with an upward flip, place the curler on top of the ends of your hair. If you want curl with a downward flip, place the hair on top of the curler. If you want a spiral curl, hold the curler vertically rather than horizontally and place the hair onto either side of the curler near its base.
-
5
Roll the curler toward your head. Continue holding the ends with your thumbs until they are secured under the wrapped hair. Upward and downward facing curls both roll the same way once you've positioned the section correctly (see step 4). For spiral curling, wrap the hair around the curler in an upward spiral as you near the scalp.
-
6
Secure the curler with a clip, pin or other fastening device. Some curler sets come with their own unique fastening systems.
-
7
Repeat this process for the rest of your hair until all of it is rolled.
-
8
Leave your curlers in for the amount of time that is recommended on the directions for your specific brand of curlers. For vented curlers, you should start with damp hair before rolling and apply heat with a blow-dryer for the specified period of time recommended on the curlers' directions.
-
9
Loosen the curlers and remove them one by one.
-
10
Style your curls using your fingers and spritz or hairspray to hold them in place.
